Tuesday Talent: Jesse Luttrell

At Trattoria Dopo Teatro last Saturday Jesse wowed the crowd with an impromptu "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody" during open mic. In Jesse's hands it is more of a tribute to Judy at Carnegie Hall than it is to Dixie. Here is a tribute to Jesse's show Bawdy at The Triad:

Luttrell cuts an impressive figure on the stage, with his legs, which reach from here to Montreal, clad in black fishnet stockings and red garters. He is an affable but mischievous host and is at his best when he struts through the crowd, improvising witty banter with the audience…

While New York, even in hard times, promotes itself as a family-friendly theme park, it’s nice to know that a few blocks north, Bawdy packs in an appreciative audience. Bawdy is a most welcome and diverting theatrical event that deserves a long life in our fair city.

"Have we been waiting for something like this since Billie, then Dinah passed on--i.e. groovy, in-the-tradition jazz singing that actually means something? Heir apparent Betty Carter is on an ego trip, Cassandra Wilson is too arty... and so on. Abbey Lincoln's trip is something else again (perhaps Parisian) as she poignantly introduces "How High The Moon" in broken French and triumphantly ends the set with Francis Lai's "Live For Life."
