Monday Music: The Bobby's & the Shore--Every Night is Saturday Night

Image
"Splish Splash" was a huge hit for Bobby Darin in 1958 and to see him perform it at Wildwood, New Jersey's Starlight Ballroom was the thrill of a 10 year old's life. Over fifty years later, it remains so. In honuor of a very beautiful older sister, her very cool boyfriend at the time and Wildwood, New Jersey, here is Mr. Darin making his "Splash" somewhere beyond the sea along with the other Bobby (Roberto Luigi Ridarelli) singing about those days at the shore that meant a lot.

It's not panzanella , but no doubt there's some comfort to be found there.

Beefcake Lunch: Italian Comfort

Image
Panzanella is great Italian comfort food having its origins in Toscana. It's a warm weather bread salad, using leftover bread. Tuscan bread has no salt and the salad uses its blandness to soak up all the textures and rich flavours. The April issue of Eating Light is featuring a great version using ciabatta, presented by the fetching Jim Denevan of Outstanding in the Field . Outstanding indeed. "A self-taught chef and artist, Jim Denevan draws inspiration from the earth to create sensual works of fleeting beauty—culinary installations in sunny farmlands across America and large-scale art pieces on the wave-swept sands of coastal beaches." Here are two sites to learn more about Mr. Denevan. Food . Art

Gay Thursday: Colton Ford

Image
The subject of Naked Fame , Christopher Long's “intelligent and appealing documentary” which tells how Colton Ford, “wildly successful gay adult film star leaves porn behind to pursue his dream: music.” If that weren’t enough, he is now part of the stunning cast of here! TV’s The Lair as Sheriff Trout. He has generously agreed to come spend time at Love Out Loud New York with good friend and co-star David Moretti. What is most striking about this formidable and multi-talented man’s modus operandi is his ability to achieve his goals flying in the face of conventional wisdom. Long time fans know that there is nothing at all conventional about the man and given his history it is a boon to POZ and AIDS Walk New York that he is doing his part for awareness and fund-raising. Find out more about him here .

The Word: Prohibition

Image
A great place on the Upper West Side at 503 Columbus Avenue . NYC 10024 . 212.579.3100. You've heard it here before: this is a very inviting and comfortable locale, i.e. Prohibition, where every night of the week something is going on. When the music isn't live in the early evening, the speakers give forth with recognizable oldies that keep the customers at their tables and at the bar. The staff friendly and accomodating, most notably Christian, Tristan, Eva, Jennifer, Desiree, Adi, Annie, Natalie, Kristen. Management knows how to hire good people, really good people. In warm weather there is outside seating. The key word is comfort and it seems that the two working owner/partners Rich and Ian do their best to make it so. The menu also serves up comfort food, such as fried calamari, chicken fingers, tuna tacos, wild mushroom ravioli, vegetable dumplings, mini-burgers, mini-pizzas and quesadillas that can be enjoyed at the bar and at tables. There is a full menu that can be peru

Sunday Song: La Via Gluck

Verdelle Smith was one of those talented singers who came and went in the 60s having a minor hit with an English version of Adriano Celentano's "Il Ragazoo della Via Gluck" called "Tar & Cement." Finding a collection of recordings is a very rewarding experience for the avid collector. Enjoy.

More Friday Night Might: More Love Out Loud 2009

Image
New York City native Jake Silbermann was raised in an artistic family and always had an interest in performing. In 2007, he landed a day player role on Guiding Light ; later that year, he was cast as Luke’s long-awaited love interest Noah on As The World Turns . Almost immediately, Silbermann was embraced by fans clamoring for an openly gay couple and [they] became a favorite pair. In fact, they were so popular, all of their scenes were put on YouTube. The pair's popularity continues to soar, as they're constantly voted Favorite Couple in Digest's online polls. Jake's contribution to their on screen chemistry speaks volumes about the acting talent of one so young. In this day and age it still needs a bit of chutzpah to play a gay role. It is getting better because of the likes of Jake Silbermann , who has graciously agreed to become part of Love Out Loud 2009 . Visit here . Gay Thursday: Life Is A Cabaret

Requiescat in Pace, Natasha. Natasha, who worked tirelessly for a cure for AIDS. Natasha, the offspring of a gay man. Natasha, who performed in Cabaret, a work from a gay man, Christopher Isherwood and alongside a gay man, Alan Cumming, who had this to say about this classy lady: I, like everyone, am totally devastated by the sudden death of Natasha Richardson. The term 'life force' seems trite but that is what she was: a woman who powered through life and fascinated everyone she encountered. I have been thinking about the times I spent with her since I heard the news of her tragic accident, and the strongest memory I have is of her laughter, her unmistakeable throaty laugh. I think that's a great way to remember someone. She was a brilliant actress. I will never forget her Blanche Dubois. It was almost too much, too real and raw. Liam and the boys and her whole family have lost an amazing woman. We all have. Goodbye, darling.

Main Entry: mo·ti·va·tion Pronunciation: \ˌmō-tə-ˈvā-shən\ Function: noun Date: 1873 1 a: the act or process of motivating b: the condition of being motivated 2: a motivating force, stimulus, or influence : incentive , drive — mo·ti·va·tion·al \-shnəl, -shə-nəl\ adjective — mo·ti·va·tion·al·ly adverb Mark Twain had this to say about people like Michael Tomasetti: Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. small minded people always try to do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can be great , which just about sums up what this denizen of Pleasant Valley is all about. Yes, he really does live in a place called Pleasant Valley. How could it not be with such a population? His work as an actor and a model takes him to more than a few major hubs in the United States: New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Phoenix. He has been featured here before. His response to become part of Love Out Loud on May 13th at Prohibition was immediat
