Songs of the Week: Justified & Ancient

The lead off song is the KLF dance classic with Tammy Wynette taking lead vocals. It is here in honour of Del Shores' Sordid Lives and the wonderful character he created, Brother Boy who has a penchant for showing up as Miss Tammy.

All bound for Mu Mu Land
All bound for Mu Mu Land
(hey hey)
All bound for Mu Mu Land (justified)
(hey hey)
All bound for Mu Mu Land
(Bring the beat back!)

They're Justified, and they're Ancient,
And they like to roam the land.
(just roll it from the top)
They're Justified, and they're Ancient,
I hope you understand.
(to the bridge, to the bridge, to the bridge now)
They called me up in Tennessee
They said "Tammy, stand by The Jams"
But if you don't like what they're going to do,
You better not stop them 'cause they're coming through
(bring the beat back)

(Hey hey)
All bound for Mu Mu Land (justified)
(Hey hey)
All bound for Mu Mu Land (justified)
(Ancients of Mu Mu)

Mu Mu Land
Mu Mu Land
All bound for Mu Mu Land

They're Justified, and they're Ancient,
And they drive an ice cream van.
(just roll it from the top)
They're Justified and they're Ancient,
With still no master plan.
(to the bridge, to the bridge, to the bridge now)
The last train left an hour ago,
They were singing "All aboard"
All bound for Mu Mu Land,
Then someone starting screaming "Turn up the Strobe"
(bring the beat back)

(Hey hey)
All bound for Mu Mu Land (justified)
(Hey hey)
All bound for Mu Mu Land (Ancients of Mu Mu)
(Bring the beat back)

Justified and Ancient, Ancient and a-justified,
Rocking to the rhythm in their ice cream van
with the plan and the key to
enter into Mu Mu
Vibes from the tribes of the Jams

I know where the beat is at,
'cos I know what time it is
Bring home a dime,
Make mine a "99"

New style, meanwhile, always on a mission while
Fishing in the rivers of life
Fishing in the rivers of life (hoi)
Fishing in the rivers of life (hoi)
Fishing in the rivers
Fishing in the rivers
Fishing in the rivers of life (hoi)

(Bring the beat back)

(Hey hey)
All bound for Mu Mu Land (justified)
(Hey hey)
All bound for Mu Mu Land (Ancients of Mu Mu)

They have travelled the world
With the ice cream van
Their voyage, the bottom of time
They have entered the place
with the Mu Mu mate
And their children so pride
Mine as a "99"
(Bring the beat back)

Mu Mu Land (Ancients of Mu Mu)
Mu Mu Land (Ancients of Mu Mu)
All bound for Mu Mu Land

Mu Mu Land (Ancients of Mu Mu)
Mu Mu Land (Ancients of Mu Mu)
All bound for Mu Mu Land

Mu Mu Land
Mu Mu Land
All bound for Mu Mu Land

"Mu Mu Land" refers to the lost continent of Mu also immortalized in The Illuminatus! Trilogy novels. That Mu may have existed is very much up for discussion that there may be a version of Brother Boy out there in this great land, there is little doubt.

This was a wonderful romp in its day and didn't have to make sense. It was, after all, Acid House Music. It's as much about Tammy as about the great music.

Beefcake Desserts: James Ellis and Nick Auger

Sweet Baby James has graced the hallowed halls of Column of Life before. It was with great pleasure to see him featured [above] in the November issue of Men's Workout. He is offered here as dessert. James, however, can be anything he wants to be: dessert, a night cap, a blanket ...

Beefcake Main Course: Bryan Thomas

Thank you very much, DNA

Saturday Beefcake: Al Dente

We are continuing with stealing from Eating Well but this time from the diet book they've published called, what else, The Eating Well Diet (7 Steps to A Healthy Trimmer You). The book bears reading. It offers a very organized way of getting back to healthy eating involving a glycemic index. Once more here is a salad, but this time something very creative involving pasta and blueberries.

As all pasta addicts concur, al dente is the only way to eat it. From About.com: al dente refers to the desired texture of cooked pasta in Italian cooking. It literally means 'to the tooth'. When the pasta is cooked al dente, there should be a slight resistance in the center when the pasta is chewed.

With all this talk about getting trim and healthy, not to mention al dente, it makes good sense to offer images of humans who are trim and healthy and who give new meaning to the words al dente. They are also well garnished.

Beefcake Cocktail Hour: Greg Plitt

If you're going to have cocktails with anyone, why not the ever striking Greg Plitt. Always good to see him.

From Workout, Season 3 Episode 6:

Greg Plitt hit the sauce hard and proposed a tipsy toast to his fellow trainers: "To Skye for bringing us all together. Because without Skye, I wouldn't have known each individual and every single one of you has enriched my life and I hope that maybe I've enriched your life and I think we've all enriched each other's lives through the process."

Greg, you've done some enriching around here. We're enriched, thank you very much.

Beefcake Snack: Ted Detwiler

In a scene from Del Shores' Southern Baptist Sissies. Visit Del's official site.

Saturday Beefcake: It's a Bunch for Lunchtime

Here are seven tasty treats from August's Eating Well. The warm weather is still with us and, while it is, light healthy morsels are often the rule. The magazine does a very good job of pointing the way to good eating.

This weekly feature will not be outdone in pointing the way to good eating. We have, therefore, included seven tasty treats of our own.

These are salads that do not necessarily require tossing ...

But a good cook always makes sure that the kitchen is thoroughly cleaned.

'Tis certainly the way to a man's heart.

If not more strategically placed parts of the anatomy.

Labor Day Weekend Beefcake: Breakfast on the Beach

Classic 50s bodybuilder/AMG model, 60s actor Ed Fury: one of a kind.

Bon Appetit.

Friday Night Might: Brandon Beemer

This native of Eugene, Oregon is also a native of the very intuitive and creative sign of Pisces who admits to having a crazy imagination since childhood. Still he didn’t seriously consider acting until much later. Instead, he played sports in high school and earned small scholarships to several colleges for track. However, upon graduating he opted to forsake higher education in favor of heading to New York when a modeling agency offered him work in the fashion industry. Although it paid the bills, Beemer felt unfulfilled by the strike-a-pose scene and began taking acting. His legions of fans are very happy that he did. No sooner did he leave the hour glass town of Salem on Days of Our Lives than he landed on The Bold & The Beautiful. Bold and beautiful indeed! Having this talented young man with us will make it more than memorable, a landmark evening with a good man for a good cause.

Gay Thursday: Gay Gold

Aussie Diver Matthew Mitcham, Openly Gay, Wins Gold!

Date: 24-Aug-2008 (From DNA)

Openly gay Australian diver Matthew Mitcham pulled a stunning upset in the 10 metre platform diving final, winning gold off favourite Chinese diver Luxin Zhou and his in form team mate Liang Huo.

After a shaky start, Matthew scored an incredible four perfect 10s and his final dive - back 2 and 1/2 sommersault 2 and 1/2 twists dive - was such perfection that it drew gasps from a, naturally, heavily pro-Chinese crowd and scored a massive 12.10points, the highest scoring dive in the history of the Olympics Matthew finished with 537.95 points to become Australia's first male Olympic gold medallist in diving since Dick Eve in 1924.

As we've reported in the past Matthew has battled depression and even retired from the sport just a couple of years ago. He hit the boards again just last year.

Congratulations Matthew from all at DNA!

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

His coach Chava Sobrino, who encouraged Mitcham back into the sport, elatedly embraced diver and Mitcham broke down in tears.

It was late 2006 that Mitcham lost passion for diving and suffering depression he quit. During his hiatus from the sport last year to make money he plunged from a tower 14 metres high into a pool of water for crowds at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney. That job reignited his passion for the sport.

One person who has been by his side for the entire tumultuous and now brilliant journey is his partner, Lachlan, he was in the crowd last night courtesy of a Johnson & Johnson Olympic sponsorship.

Mitcham is one of only a few "out" gay athletes in Beijing and the first Australian to openly declare his homosexuality going into an Olympics. He's been a cover-boy for gay magazines and featured on the cult gossip website Perezhilton.com accompanied by the tagline: "Yum. Yum. Yum! Can we have a piece of that????".

From the first round the Chinese divers were on song Zhou luxin scored 84.00 and Huo Liang 82.50.

Mitcham's first dive was shaky and not well executed he finished with a poor 73.50 in 9th spot after first round. But the second dive, a back three and 1/2 somersault, rescued his score and boosted him up to second place. He registered four 10s - gave him a score of 97.35 for the back 3 and half somersault.

He continued on consitently, and was in bronze position after round for of five. His fifth dive, an armstand back double somersault, one and half twists, put him in silver.

For his last dive Mitcham needed something brilliant for gold and he found it ...

He smiled broadly as he collected the Olympic gold, triumphantly throwing his hands in the air. Tears fell again when the medal was slipped over his head and around his neck.

Mitcham's final dive was the highest scoring dive in Olympic history and he was stunned. His thoughts?

"I think it's something to beat next time," Mitcham said. "Everything absolutely everything has been for this. I knew it was a far chance but I did everything, absolutely everything I could, to give myself the best chance of doing it. It's actually happened I never thought it would."

First dive and third dive "weren't the best". He kept the faith.

"I knew the best dives would come," Mitcham said.

His rocky road to the top was worth it Mitcham said last night.

"Coming back and doing everything I did was to win an Olympic gold medal. When I was training every single day, twice a day, eleven sessions a week, thirty hours a week before every single dive I said to myself; 'I want to win an Olympic gold'.

"It was all worth it."

Then of course, DNA reports this today:

Matthew Mitcham
Date: 28-Aug-2008
The American Olympic broadcaster NBC has apologised over a perceived snub of Matthew Mitcham's partner Lachlan and the issue of Mitcham being the only openly gay man at the Beijing Olympics.

The TV network's Olympics President Gary Zenkel has said sorry for the NBC reporting team team not mentioning on the air that Australian gold-medal winning diver Matthew Mitcham is gay and has a partner:

"We regret that we missed the opportunity to tell Matthew Mitcham's story. We apologise for this unintentional omission."

The statement was released after earlier in the week an NBC spokesperson defended the network’s decision not to mention it.

Wednesday's Word II: Adam Grimes

Function: adjective
1 giving or sharing in abundance and without hesitation … Synonyms bounteous, bountiful, charitable, free, freehanded, liberal, munificent, openhanded, unselfish, unsparing

Adam Grimes took up acting because he was inspired by his high school drama teacher. It is now this Vermont native’s turn to do the inspiring and inspire he does as General Hospital: Night Shift's Doctor Kyle Julian. He is a member of the long-form comedy group, Supermodel, as well as an alumnus of 10 West Improvisational Theater indicating that this is a rising talent with range and versatility. Add generous to his many attributes, because it didn’t take much for him to agree to be part of Love Out Loud West's "Soaps in the City" on October 16th at East/West Lounge in West Hollywood.
Jack Myers, who also posts on the Huffington Post, had more than one encouraging word bout Adam’s current place of work:

“The stories of these characters may not be ground-breaking, but they are totally engaging, some in a fun and relaxed way, others on a level of surprising emotional connection. The same holds for the many different patients who move through the hospital in every episode, often touching the lives of the doctors and nurses with whom they interact. For example, tonight’s episode further explores the difficult relationship between brothers Leo and Kyle when they become caught up in a conflict between a young woman seeking to honor the wishes of her dying partner and the partner’s homophobic parents.

I’ll close with another line I’m surprised to find myself writing: Night Shift is such a pleasant surprise that I wish SOAPnet would run it one night a week all year long! It has made Port Charles fun again.” Read all of it here.

Wednesday's Word I: Andrew Christian

POZevent has the good fortune of having Andrew Christian on board as a sponsor ...

Function: adjective
1 giving or sharing in abundance and without hesitation … Synonyms bounteous, bountiful, charitable, free, freehanded, liberal, munificent, openhanded, unselfish, unsparing

Tuesday Talent: Jon Stewart

This has been stolen, hook, line and sinker from HuffingtonPost.com. It is only one of the many reasons that gay men wish they could call Jon the Beloved as one of their own. We love you, Bubila.

As Comedy Central's Daily Show descends on Denver for four days of coverage, Jon Stewart took after the "established" media for getting too cozy with candidates and regurgitating campaign spin when it comes to political coverage.

In a breakfast with reporters, Stewart directed most of his ire at the 24-hour cable news networks, which he called "gerbil wheels," and said the media at-large had "abdicated" to what he called the "slow-witted beast."

He said the never-ending television news cycle creates a "false sense of urgency" and forces reporters to "follow the veins that have been mined," instead of pursuing serious and in-depth reporting.

At Comedy Central's Indecision2008 blog, Dennis DiClaudio called the breakfast "the second most fascinating, most I-can't-believe-I'm experiencing-this, thing I have ever witnessed in my admittedly very unfascinating and inexperienced life."

But it wasn't the first time Stewart called the media to task. The lecture was reminiscent of his famous 2004 "Crossfire" appearance, in which he asked the hosts to "stop hurting America."

Monday Musing: Cutting Off Noses & Spiting Faces, Lest We Forget

Three short years ago, good people--this was on our minds. Dear Clintonistas, who cling to your bitterness and think of supporting McCain and the Republicans--thoroughly illogical and not in anyone's best interest--least of all your own. Three Short Years Ago.

Life will go on but not without the overriding thought that not only will one of the major cities of the United States with a rich culture never be the same, but the US itself will never be the same. The unofficial end of summer marks the unofficial end of the Bush Presidency as well as its ascendancy which was based on the false hope of its ability to protect the citizens of this country from terror. Katrina was a natural terror and Ol’ George flunked this test miserably. There is no glory in that for those who do not support him. However, there should not be great surprise. He is carrying on a grand old tradition. Lest we forget Kent State and Mr. Reagan’s ignorance regarding AIDS.

The tragedy of New Orleans definitely puts a new perspective on the Republican Party’s Southern strategy. Lest we forget that these are the same people who stole an election in front of God and everybody in 2000. Lest we forget that this is the same President who refuses to meet with the NAACP Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell and Clarence Thomas notwithstanding. They are certainly not field hands.

Lest we forget the arrogance of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove.
Lest we forget Trent Lott’s front porch.
Lest we forget Rush Limbaugh’s remark about why these people don’t have cars.
Lest we forget Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Jesse Helms, Rumsfeld, Cheney and the myriad of people who participate in the good ol’ boy network.

Was the aftermath of Katrina something that Mr. G.W. Bush planned?
Probably not. Yet it not only indicates how incompetent this administration is when it counts, when it is absolutely necessary for the Federal Government to intervene. Even Ike sent troops to Alabama when it became necessary – to protect black people. It definitely indicates how this administration is thoroughly uncaring when opportunism does not prevail. Cindy Sheehan did a very good job of pointing that out.

Lest we forget. The Christian Right is neither.

Lest we forget. Lynn Cheney called John Kerry a very bad man for bringing up her daughter’s very public lesbianism.

Lest you forget, Mrs. Cheney, your husband, second in command was on vacation while the first in command was doing the same thing. Do you want to talk about very bad men?

Lest we forget, this administration’s Miss Ann was at the theater, while a bona fide tragedy was happening to those of her own race.

If you are not angry that many people have needlessly died because of these very bad people, that can’t be helped, but if you are not the right kind of American, be afraid.

It is almost comforting that France, Germany, Venezuela and Cuba have offered to help.

Life will go on and finally relief will come to the good and the bad in the south. We all have a Southern Strategy. Life will go on in spite of the incompetence of this administration.

Lest we forget.

Sunday Songs: Kym Mazelle

Ms. Mazelle may very well have been the soul in Soul II Soul. One of her solo endeavours, Brilliant, is full of it. She can put all the passion of an ongoing relationship in her voice and tell the story that needs to be told. The three cuts here were part of the dance scene in the late 80s and early 90s. There's jazz and inflection in these renditions--something that good dance music needs. Yes. She's taken Jean Carnes' "Was That All It Was" and given it even more pathos and grit. Perhaps that's why she's come to the conclusion that the man is "Useless." She's also very much a gospel singer and she endows that genre with her special delivery. There doesn't seem to be an official website, but she's on MySpace. Take a look. There are worse discoveries you could make.

Patriotic Beefcake Dessert

As we make the transition from the Olympics to a political convention, if you're going to drape yourself in the flag, this is one of the better ways.

Saturday Beefcake Main Course

This is perfect ...

... for the season and quite tasty.

Two more tasty side dishes just to have enough.
