Gay Thursday: Civil Unions for Everyone!

These two gentlemen may not be getting married, but they are having a very civil union. It's all well and good that there is some recent fervor for same gender matrimony. It may very well be another set up for this election cycle. It keeps getting rerun until somebody gets it right. What's right is this that there should only be civil unions sanctioned by the state across the board. The state of matrimony is sacramental and only churches should anoint it. At any rate as long as the State sanctions matrimony there should be equal rights and privileges for all.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A majority of registered Californian voters oppose changing the constitution of the most populous U.S. state to bar gays from marrying, according to poll released on Wednesday.

The Field Poll survey found 51 percent against approving a possible November ballot measure to prohibit gay marriage, with 43 percent in favor. A slightly differently worded question on the same issue found 54 percent opposed and 40 percent in favor.

The poll follows a state Supreme Court decision this month that barring homosexuals from marrying violated the California Constitution. Opponents of same-sex marriage have intensified efforts to put a state constitutional amendment on the ballot in November.

The poll found a strong generational gap on the issue, with those aged 18-29 approving of gay marriage by 68 percent and those 65 or older disapproving by 55 percent.

The poll found that in recent decades a growing number of Californians have approved allowing same-sex couples to marry, with 51 percent of those polled now approving, up from 44 percent in 2006 and 30 percent in 1985.

The poll of 1,052 registered Californian voters was taken from May 17-26, in the days after California Supreme Court decision, and had a sampling error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points to 5 percentage points, depending on the question.

The Berlin Memorial to Gays who Perished in the Hitler Years.

Date: 28-May-2008

A memorial to the persecution of gays during the Third Reich years in Germany has been unveiled in Berlin.

Homosexuality did not fit into Hitler’s plan for a superior master race, and 55,000 gay men were therefore classed as criminals. As many as 15,000 gays died in the Nazi’s concentration camps during Hitler’s reign.

The gay mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, unveiled the memorial – a large concrete ‘box’ with a window that displays a film of two men kissing inside.

Wowereit, disappointed that these gay victims had not been recognised until now, says that the delay in honouring them was symptomatic of “a society which did not acknowledge a group of people as victims, only because they chose another way of life.”

From the HuffingtonPost:

Dunkin Donuts has pulled a commercial featuring pitchwoman Rachael Ray wearing a scarf because Michelle Malkin and other conservative observers thought the scarf looked too much like a keffiyeh, what Malkin describes as "the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad."

The Boston Globe: Dunkin' Donuts Yanks Rachael Ray Ad

May 27, 2008

Does Dunkin’ Donuts really think its customers could mistake Rachael Ray for a terrorist sympathizer? The Canton-based company has abruptly canceled an ad in which the domestic diva wears a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.

Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin, were so incensed by the ad that there was even talk of a Dunkin’ Donuts boycott.
‘‘The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad,’’ Malkin yowls in her syndicated column.
‘‘Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons.’’
The company at first pooh-poohed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh. But the right-wing drumbeat on the blogosphere continued and by yesterday, Dunkin’ Donuts decided it’d be easier just to yank the ad.

Said the suits in a statement: ‘‘In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial.’’

(In case you’re wondering, the stylist who selected the offending scarf was not Gretta Enterprises boss Gretchen Monahan, who appears on Ray’s TV show as a style consultant.)

For her part, Malkin was pleased with Dunkin’s response: ‘‘It’s refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists.’

Tuesday Talent: Giovanni and/or Romeo Roselli

This feature in both of its versions exists to point someone out who has something to offer. A great deal of the time it has a lot to do with someone who is capable of revitalizing one’s fantasy life. There have also been many who are not only easy on the eyes but are actually talented. You can go back and opine for yourself who they are. There have also been more than a few who have good hearts. Sometimes, like this one, one comes up doing a search and catches your eye.

Roselli may be one of those professional wrestlers who is looking to cross over into cinema work. There have been more who have a modicum of success than one might think. Wrestling requires creating a persona to go along with one’s style. Hence, Rosselli’s two first names: Giovanni and Romeo, the second of which is the persona that once was part of the tag team “The Heartthrobs.” These athletic entertainers necessarily have to act and quite often follow through on story lines. In recent memory, John Cena and quite notably Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have had their piece of the cinematic pie. Who knows if this heartbreaker can follow in those rather large foot steps?

Wikipedia had this to say: “Although Roselli continues to work as an independent wrestler, as well as a certified personal trainer, he apparently has turned his attention to acting. He is a member of SAG and AFTRA, and has roles in the films College Road Trip, Baby Mama, and a featured role in The Wrestler.” [starring Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei]

Here is this cute clip retrieved from YouTube:

Of course, as you know, this web log is enamoured with all things Italian and with good reason. So, here is one more reason.

Monday Musing: Memorial Redux 2008

Death is a fact of life and it comes to everyone. War brings death but it is not inevitable. Today's remembrance is for the fallen.

While there have been such things as righteous wars of self-defense there is no such thing as a good war.

There can be on the other hand a peaceful death and it is the best anyone can hope for. It's been said that fear of death is tantamount to fear of living and living necessitates being surrounded by loving friends and relatives. The sadness of those left behind has no equal and it forever changes their lives. A creative life full of dear people enables final peace for the departed and in some way eventually for the intimates within that life. Grieving is that process that helps the living to go on after the departure of a loved one even without any revelation as to the meaning of life. It is part of embracing what is.

Death by war necessitates fear and turmoil. Support of the soldiers means that we want them to come home to their loving friends and relatives. We want their good intentions to protect them. We hope that there will never again be unknown soldiers and that the final peace will be as such for everyone.

Sunday Songs: Gratitude to the Gods, Musical and Otherwise

Although there is a serious raison d’etre for this three day weekend, it is the unofficial commencement of summer and for that reason are posted a trio of songs from the uniquely talented Billy Stewart who passed away just two months shy of his thirty-third birthday, placing him in a pantheon of young rock'n'roll geniuses who left the world much too soon.

Edited From Soul-Patrol.com:

In December 1964, Billy recorded and released a masterpiece titled, "I Do Love You." The song hit both the R&B and Pop charts and stayed on the charts for 21 weeks. The next release was "Sitting In The Park." It hit Top Ten R&B and Top Twenty pop. Billy was in popular demand.

His extensive touring made it impossible for him to get back in the studio to record, because, as Billy put it, touring paid more of the bills than receiving record royalties. Finally, in the summer of 1966, Billy wanted to try something new and different. Trying to reach more into the pop stream, Billy Davis suggested that he try recording an album of standards, which would broaden his audience.

Billy went back to a song that won him a local talent show as teenager with "Summertime." The recording took place on October 6, 1965 and featured the regular Chess session musicians including Pete Cosey on guitar, Louis Satterfield on the electric bass, Sonny Thompson on piano and a young drummer, (who would go on to have a major influence in the 70's later with his group Earth, Wind & Fire) Maurice White. Maurice White played session drums for all of the hit records at Chess. With Billy's trademark of doubling words and his new nickname being "Motormouth," this was Billy at his best.

It paid off, making "Summertime" his first crossover top ten hit on the Pop charts and hitting #7 on the R&B charts.

In honour of the oncoming season, here are some pics of a young man in Timoteo swimwear. If it’s good enough for DNA, it’s good enough for Column of Life. There’s nothing like a young god in a bathing suit.

Timothy [and Timoteo] etymology
masc. proper name, from Fr. Timothée, from L. Timotheus, from Gk. Timotheos, lit. "honoring God," from time "honor, respect" + theos "god."

Saturday Beefcake Breakfast

Well, either it's the most important meal of the day or it's not. There's so much discussion about what breakfast can or cannot, should or should not do. Some things, however, are worth waking up to.

Main Event II: Barbara Porteus

Barbara can love out loud with the best of them.

Friday's Main Event I: From A Fan

(Alicia Minshew and fans)

“Loving Out Loud”

Bright sunshine and blue skies warmed the sidewalk on the west side of Columbus Avenue and 84th Street in Upper Manhattan. Late afternoon brought a line of people to the entrance of Prohibition, a high-end bar and restaurant that is reminiscent of the 1920s and ’30s fused with a modern edge. This comfortable, cozy eatery once again served as the venue for the 3rd annual POZ kickoff to AIDS Walk New York held on May 14th.

POZ is “the premier lifestyle, treatment and advocacy magazine for people living with—and those affected by—HIV and AIDS,” explained Giovanni Vitacolonna via e-mail. Vitacolonna is the circulation supervisor of POZ magazine and coordinator of the event. Daytime actors from One Life to Live, As the World Turns, Guiding Light and All My Children, along with other local celebrities like Jack Mackenroth of Project Runway came out to support the cause. A total of $7,500 from that evening went toward the POZ team’s fund-raising for the May 18 AIDS Walk, bringing the grand total to over $13,800.

(Rich Herschenfeld of Prohibition with fiancee, Alicia Minshew and Thorsten Kaye)

With over 200 in attendance, fans of AMC’s Zach and Kendall, portrayed by Thorsten Kaye and Alicia Minshew, came out in force. This year’s POZ theme “Love Out Loud” was on full display. Crystal McCovery flew in from Las Vegas to not only see her friends from the online Z&K Message Board, but to see Kaye and Minshew. A three year member of the Z&K board, this is the second time McCovery has attended the POZ kick-off event. McCovery and a fellow board member collected additional money on the Z&K board to donate to POZ. “It started three years ago. The first year, we (members of the Z&K board) raised $500, the second $2,550 and this year, $2,600.” Though HIV/AIDS has not impacted McCovery personally, she does support the cause and has participated in the Los Angeles AIDS walk and has done some of her own fund-raising.

(Van Hansis and Billy Magnussen of As the World Turns)

For fellow Z&K board members, Kay Gordon of Greensboro, N.C., and Susan Johnson of Richmond, Virginia, the impact of HIV/AIDS has personal meaning. Gordon and Johnson have lost people close to them and feel very strongly about raising money for AIDS. “I have a friend who lost a son to AIDS several years ago before all the new medication, etc. And while the disease has not hit my family directly, I know the pain it caused my friend,” explains Johnson. Gordon lost three close friends to AIDS, the last dying nine years ago. “It is heartbreaking and shattering to this day.”

(Marj Dusay of Guiding Light talking about her late son, Randy)

In addition to traveling north for the POZ event, Gordon ordered several hundred bracelets with the theme “Love Out Loud,” joined by two ribbons and Team POZ 2008 on the back. These bracelets were given to members of the POZ staff, as well as to the celebrities who attended the event. The proceeds Gordon made for selling the bracelets were donated to POZ and the rest of the bracelets were given to Vitacolonna to do “with what he wishes.” [POZ will use them for its upcoming Los Angeles event.]

(Thorsten Kaye and Alicia Minshew)

Vitacolonna has been part of the POZ staff for the last two and a half years. He’s a Star Walker for the Walk. When he came to work at POZ, he decided to make the effort “a bit more formal.” Over the last three years, “Love Out Loud” has grown, with more actors and primetime personalities attending. For the future, Vitacolonna sees the event turning “into a VIP soiree, and we’d like to develop more elaborate fund-raising functions for the stage.”

(Alicia Minshew, Billy Miller and Melissa Claire Egan of All My Children)

What about all those crazy Zendall fans? Throughout the three-hour event, they “Loved Out Loud,” dancing to music, enjoying each other’s company and uniting together because of two very special actors who inspired the Z&K board. “We seem to be more dedicated to the actors more than the characters they play on the show. We love Thorsten and Alicia first and foremost,” McCovery explains. Gordon concurs. “The uniqueness starts with the loyalty to the couple. That goes directly to the talent, presence and love/respect for the fans of the actors themselves. Zen fans are unique because of TK and Lish and who they are.”

(Mark Dobies and Kamar de los Reyes of One Life to Live)

Vitacolonna explains it is not unusual for a group of fans to come together and raise additional money to donate. Of the members of the Z&K board, “they are the best in the soap world.”
