The Word: Class and the Lack of It

No need to look very far these days to see the large gaping hole where class should be in politics and those who report it:

So, take a break and experience some good stuff.

Zuill Bailey has been a favourite in these parts for a while--quite a charming fellow.

Look for the cellist in the March 2008 edition of Strings Magazine.

A cover feature, Mr. Bailey gives a full interview in which he discusses his musical background, inspirations, and his deep passion for audience connection:

"I will always be first and foremost a cellist, but I don't see this as a life as a cellist; I see it as a life in music, as being a part of how the arts influence history and culture and keep our society moving onward and upward. Making recordings, speaking to the audience during concerts, being an artistic director, outreach, the whole HBO thing—these are all [part of] a grand attempt to bring my love for classical music to the masses without underselling it in any way. I've always been this way. This is not some image or personality I've tried to invent. This is me."

... bringing to mind these kind and gentle people:

Classical Action, like most ventures, started as a concept, in response to a question.

The question, posed to me in the early 1990's, was "Why isn't the classical music performing arts community more engaged in the fight against AIDS?"

The concept focused on the idea of bringing the performing arts community into this cause by offering them a variety of opportunities to offer their time and talent in support of people with AIDS and HIV around the country.

In the 13 years since Classical Action opened its fundraising doors, they have raised more than $6 million. This response certainly bears out the concept, as witnessed by the inspiring generosity of so many lovers of the arts, performing artists, managers, recording companies, administrators, and other professionals in the performing arts field who care deeply about helping those who have been impacted by the AIDS epidemic.

A concept is only as good as those who endorse it and bring it to fruition.
