Tuesday Talent: John Lloyd Young

For his Broadway debut in Jersey Boys, John Lloyd won the Tony Award (Best Performance by a Leading Actor), the Drama Desk Award (Outstanding Lead Actor), the Outer Critics Circle Award (Outstanding Lead Actor), a Theatre World Award (Outstanding Broadway Debut), was nominated for the Drama League Award (Performer of the Year), and can be heard as lead singer Frankie Valli on the Grammy-winning cast album. John Lloyd Young is one of only two American actors in history to win the Lead Actor in a Musical Tony Award for his Broadway debut (joining Robert Alda) and the only American actor in history to win the Lead Actor in a Musical Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards for his Broadway debut.



Last night's Stockings With Care fund-raiser was a success for many reasons not the least of which was to have John Lloyd serve drinks to donors. He graciously smiled back at a kiss blown in his direction.

"Have we been waiting for something like this since Billie, then Dinah passed on--i.e. groovy, in-the-tradition jazz singing that actually means something? Heir apparent Betty Carter is on an ego trip, Cassandra Wilson is too arty... and so on. Abbey Lincoln's trip is something else again (perhaps Parisian) as she poignantly introduces "How High The Moon" in broken French and triumphantly ends the set with Francis Lai's "Live For Life."
