The Tuesday De-Briefing: Matt Battaglia

Ford continues to have a better idea employing Matt Battaglia to sell its trucks. This web log took notice when he played Drew Boyd on the gay Showtime soap opera, Queer As Folk:

"To Thine Own Self Be Drew" (30 July 2005)

Dave Kopay did it in the real world and now Drew Boyd is going to do it in fictional Pittsburgh. What makes Drew Boyd’s story on Queer As Folk relevant is that he didn’t consider himself gay because his sexual activity didn’t involve affection. When he admits to Emmett that he wanted to kiss him and that he had feelings for him, he, therefore, admits that he is gay. Coming attractions indicate that Drew will come out on television news. Would that football players livin’ on the down low in the real world follow suit. Matt Battaglia garnered some positive attention on the pages of our forum last year for obvious reasons when the character he plays, Drew Boyd, took up with Emmett. Happy days for the viewer that Drew has returned to deal with his feelings: he returned to Emmett after being blackmailed and deciding not to give in to the extortion. Emmett exhorts him to be honest with himself. Tune in next week. Same time. Same station. It is obvious for the most part where this is going. Thank you for going there.

Everyone seems to be on the same page on de-briefing Matteo. He was de-briefed quite well in a scene or two where Drew gives in to his passion for Emmett.

On Datalounge, it seems, there is some discussion on Battaglia's political leanings. On his official web site he does talk about God and about supporting our troops in an inobtrusive way. Is it inconsistent with playing a character like Drew Boyd? Seems not. Drew Boyd went forward and told the world who he was and expressed a true and honest love to Emmett. Matt talks about prayer and positive thinking. The educated guess would have it that Matt is religious and supportive of the military in a non-judgmental way. Remember also his participation in the LOGO MOW in Adrian Paul's Tides of War as the loyal best friend of Adrian Paul's gay commander.

Matteo is also a philanthropist having set up the Jubilee foundation to raise money in the fight against cancer in honour of his departed mother.

Well, the atmosphere around here perhaps got a little too serious for what the weekly de-briefing usually entails -- and Matteo was first noticed, in these parts anyway, in a very small part in Showgirls. Serious or frivolous, Ford does have a better idea, but QAF's was mo' better. The best is to keep Matt Battaglia around and very much on display briefed or de-briefed as the case may be.
