The Wednesday Word: More Talent, John Colella

John Colella

"An actor who perceives little on the page, puts little on the stage".

Since I've been teaching over these last few years, there is one major common denominator I've found at the base of most actor's problems whether it be in Scene Study or On-Camera Audition class, making clear and strong choices that realize the moment.

This 4 week intensive is about sound techniques of reading a script that will help insure your interpretations are valid and stage/screen worthy. Learn to work Backwards as well as Forwards and mine the "gold" right off the page.

Acting is a collaborative process. After these 4 weeks, you'll bring more than you ever have to the table in auditions, rehearsals, and to set. I guarantee it.

Dror Barak Dead at 38

2.27.2012

By Out.com Editors

Model and personal trainer reportedly dead from apparent suicide

According to reports on Facebook and Twitter, Dror Barak, aka Roman Ragazzi, has died of an apparent suicide on February 25 at the age of 38. Barak most recently appeared in a fashion story in the February issue of Out, titled "New York's Finest," photographed by Marcelo Krasilcic (pictured left).

The former Israeli military trainer was outed in 2007 by New York Post’s "Page Six" while working at the Israeli consulate, the ensuing scandal caused him to resign. Later that year, he started a personal training and fitness company called Freedom Fitness.

According to this blog, Raging Stallion head Chris Ward (who named Roman Ragazzi Raging Stallion’s Man of the Year in 2008) said, “He was probably the hottest man I have ever filmed—a massive man of pure beauty, intelligence and kindness. He was perfect in every possible way.”

This gentleman graced this Web Log in the past, mainly because he frequents the gym of a good friend. Well, Tom Bacchus [go here] has de-briefed "Roman Ragazzi" for all to see. Here's the whole story from Page Six (New York Post) ...

Israeli Aide Quits In Sex Flap

An Israeli consulate official quit his job Monday moments after Page Six asked him if he was involved in a gay porn site.

Dror Barak, a k a Roman Ragazzi, worked in the administrative offices of the Israeli consulate while moonlighting as a "model" and gay porn star.

In e-mails to an interested party looking to hire Barak for "modeling" work abroad, Barak - who at first identified himself as Ragazzi - said, "I am single. I work at the United Nations in New York. They don't know about my other job, and that's how it should stay."

Barak told the party, "I need to know that I am not wasting my time here. And this is for real. I will need you to purchase a ticket for me online with American Airlines."

Barak directed the source to messenger tickets to his office at the U.N.

The e-mails got more personal, and Barak wrote, "I am openly gay . . . just to put the record straight. I just started doing porn movies. None of my movies is out yet. I know you mention 'escort.' I never did escort, and I don't do it."

On Barak's page on bigmuscle.com (under the name gymscle), Barak writes, "I find focused, career-minded and successful individuals sexy."

On romanragazzi.com, "Roman" is decribed as, "beyond a shadow of any doubt, the sexiest, hairy, muscled stud to turn up in the porn world in years." After a gushing description of his genitals, the Web site urges, "Look for him in upcoming scenes."

When contacted by Page Six on Monday, Barak said, "I don't know [Roman Ragazzi]. I will call you back." Soon after, he left the consulate and tendered his resignation.

David Sarenga, the consulate's press rep, said, "[Barak] worked in the administrative offices for over a year before leaving our employ earlier this week. He was a local hire." Sarenga refused to go into the consulate's background-search policy.

Israel has been rocked by several recent scandals. Israeli President Moshe Katsav has been on leave of absence since August, when he was accused by more than five women of sexual harassment. In March, Israel recalled its ambassador to El Salvador, Tsuriel Raphael, after he was found two weeks earlier outside his residence tied up, gagged and drunk while wearing bondage equipment.

Some Black & Whites With Your Saturday Beefcake Morning Coffee?

From epicurious.com

For cookies
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup well-shaken buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup (5 1/3 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg

For icings
1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 to 2 tablespoons water
1/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder

Make cookies:
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Stir together buttermilk and vanilla in a cup.

Beat together butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes, then add egg, beating until combined well. Mix in flour mixture and buttermilk mixture alternately in batches at low speed (scraping down side of bowl occasionally), beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix until smooth.

Spoon 1/4 cups of batter about 2 inches apart onto a buttered large baking sheet. Bake in middle of oven until tops are puffed and pale golden, and cookies spring back when touched, 15 to 17 minutes. Transfer with a metal spatula to a rack and chill (to cool quickly), about 5 minutes.

Make icings while cookies chill:

Stir together confectioners sugar, corn syrup, lemon juice, vanilla, and 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl until smooth. Transfer half of icing to another bowl and stir in cocoa, adding more water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, to thin to same consistency as white icing.

Ice cookies:

Turn cookies flat sides up, then spread white icing over half of each and chocolate over other half.

Cooks'note:
• If you can stand the wait, cookies taste better if cooled without being chilled

According to the William Greenberg Bakery:

The key to eating a black and white cookie, according to Jerry Seinfeld, is to get some black and some white in each bite. “Nothing mixes better than vanilla and chocolate,” says Jerry, explaining the art form in episode 74 of Seinfeld.
New Yorkers are fiercely loyal to this quintessential regional confection. Sophisticated black and white cookies have been fashioned by hand and made fresh daily at Manhattan’s William Greenberg Bakery since 1946. These classic cookies, voted “Best of New York,” are delicious comfort treats etched into the childhood memories of New Yorkers. They are legendary, they are mythical, but above all they are supremely delicious.

If you didn't grow up in New York, chances are you've never tasted the cake-like texture topped with matching half moons of dark chocolate and vanilla icing. The black and white cookie is, in fact, not a cookie but a flat, thinly frosted cake, like someone has sat on a cupcake. Cookie convenience, cupcake taste. You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy them.

Wednesday Word/Gay Thursday: Dan Savage

Dan Savage on His Special, Santorum
2.23.2012

from the OUT.Com Editors

The 'It Gets Better' co-founder explains why Rick Santorum is newly "terrifying," responds to trans glitter bombers, and explains why MTV gave him his own special.
The hour-long It Gets Better special premiered earlier this week on MTV. It means that one of the most well-known spokesgays has taken a popular message (even President Obama has done a video) to one of the broadest teen audiences (alongside shows about teenage pregnancy and following bizarre dreams of becoming rodeo professionals). In an interview earlier this week, Savage spoke to The Advocate about the current presidential campaign and a variety of other subjects. Savage has famously denounced Republican nominee Rick Santorum and even invented a disgusting definition for his name (that has kinda stuck). When The Advocate asked about his take on Santorum's surge in the primaries, he responded:

"You could knock me over with a drop of Santorum. I am completely blown away by this. I do think that the clock ran out. Everybody else had their surge and he had a surge at just the right time for Iowa. But now it’s something different. Some people are saying that because the economy is improving, Mitt’s rationale for running is kind of deflated and his selling point is deflated and the GOP base is now looking to run against birth control? And Santorum is benefiting from a shift to social issues. Whatever it is, it’s terrifying." Go here for all of it.

Tuesday Talent: Manganiello Magic

Joe Manganiello co-stars in Magic Mike a flick based on Channing Tatum's stripper days. He has this to say to OUT:

The strippers in Magic Mike are more the types that shake it Chippendales-style for bachelorettes than gyrating go-go boys at your local gay watering hole. “This is Chan’s experience,” Manganiello says of the homoerotic, yet hetero-themed, flick.

Manganiello interviewed a former male stripper to research the era. “All the guys he worked with were dead or in rehab,” he says, “but it was the time of his life -- this insanely destructive lifestyle, this club life. It was sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll... and getting paid to take your clothes off and have sex.”

Manganiello promises Magic Mike will incorporate all of the complexities of the grind. “There are a lot of drugs, the overdosing, the depraved lifestyle,” he says. “But on the other side, it’s hilarious.” Go here for complete interview.

Monday Musing: Obama in 2012

When Hillary Clinton addressed the Human Rights Council in Geneva in December 2011. She outlined the Obama Administration’s directives:

* U.S. agencies overseas are directed to strengthen efforts to combat the criminalization by foreign governments of LGBT status or conduct in addition to expanding efforts to combat discrimination overseas on this basis.

* The Departments of State and Homeland Security are directed to ensure LGBT people seeking asylum in the United States have equal access to protection and assistance. Additionally, the Departments of State, Justice and Homeland Security are to ensure appropriate training is in place for government personnel to help LGBT refugees and asylum seekers.

* U.S. foreign aid agencies are directed to engage regularly with governments, citizens, civil society and the private sector to foster an awareness of LGBT human rights.

* The State Department is to lead a “standing group” geared toward ensuring swift response to serious incidents threatening the human rights of LGBT people overseas.

* U.S. agencies overseas are directed to work with international organizations to counter anti-LGBT discrimination and increase the number of countries willing to defend LGBT issues.

* U.S. agencies engaged abroad are required to prepare a report for the State Department within 180 days on their progress on these initiatives. The department will then compile a larger report for the president.
She pointed out that gay rights are human rights. There can be no doubt that President Obama has been the best President the gay community has ever had. These directives are profoundly important, the most important LGBT advance.

This was going to be a discussion about how there are no perfect candidates and point out that liberals who are disappoint¬ed, e.g. Matt Damon, are that way because they placed all their eggs in a messianic candidate. There are none and never have been. Obama has been painted with a far left brush, but he was never that--not even as a candidate. Oh, and neither was Hillary. There was also going to be a discussion about what an embarrassment to true conservatives have the recent crop of conservative candidates been. A sad commentary on American politics that Santorum or Bachmann or Palin are front and center at all, even in a local election.

Has realistic and honest discourse disappeared from the political landscape? At least, with a less than perfect, but also the most progressive candidate—relatively speaking—Mr. Obama, there is discourse: at least he is intelligent and not crazy.

Obama for President in 2012.

Saturday Beefcake Getting You Through the Night

Saturday Beefcake Foreplay

A Saturday Beefcake Hit

Nick Youngquest is assuredly one of the more delectable human beings alive.

From Wikipedia:

Nick Youngquest (born 28 July 1983 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer for the Castleford Tigers[2] club of Europe's Super League. He previously played for Crusaders RL,[3] Gateshead Thunder,[4] Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, St George Illawarra Dragons, Penrith Panthers and Bulldogs. He primarily plays on the wing.
In late 2007, Youngquest agreed to a one-year deal with the Wests Tigers, his fourth club in six years, but failed to make the NRL squad.[5] Youngquest was released mid-way through the 2008 season and signed with the Bulldogs as a replacement for the released Cameron Phelps.[6]
After failing to make an impact in the NRL after six seasons, he moved to play for the French rugby league team Salanque Meditérrannée PIA XIII (also known as the Pia Donkeys) following the conclusion of the 2008 NRL season.[7]
In 2009, Nick Youngquest played for English Championship team; Gateshead Thunder, where he caught the eye of Brian Noble, the coach for Crusaders RL. Youngquest signed with the Crusaders shortly before the start of the 2010 Super League season.[8]
In 2010, Nick Signed with Nous Model Management, a prestigious modeling agency in Los Angeles.

In 2006 Youngquest posed for the Naked Rugby League Calendar 2007-08 stirring controversy after his revealing pose - in which one hand is placed partially over his genitalia. The NRL reacted by distancing itself from the project, stating that they do not endorse nor authorise the calendar. The sales of the calendar helped to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.[9] Nick also spent the 2008/09 season playing in France for the Pia Burro (Donkeys)
