Tuesday Talent: Patricia Mauceri & Saundra Santiago

Patricia Mauceri has been let go by One Life to Live allegedly because she refused to play her character, Carlotta Vega, as accepting of homosexuality, because it is against her personal beliefs as a Roman Catholic. She has been replaced by Saundra Santiago who has done stage and screen, most recently and very memorably in the revival of Nine.

What makes it even crazier is the rumour is that Mauceri's involvement could not possibly have been for more than a scene or two, given that her character is recurring and has been reduced to serving coffee in most instances. Carlotta hasn’t been seen in months. Accordingly, Carlotta mistakenly thinks her own son Cristian might be gay and is proactive in helping him accept it. Good Grief! Carlotta has been witness to multiple marriages of her offspring among other things, among them a crime lord sibling--none of which are acceptable to Mauceri's Church. How many things as an allegedly staunchly Roman Catholic mother did Carlotta accept! Most notably she stood by her children’s promiscuous behaviour not to mention her affairs with Clint Buchanan and Hank Gannon.

Some have suggested that Mauceri quit over the integrity of the character. Well, the integrity of that character was compromised about five years ago when it was revealed that she was hiding her niece in a convent school, raising her nephew as her own and hid her own brother’s entire life of high crime. Mauceri, it should also be mentioned, was a supporting player in I Think I Do, a gay themed film starring Tuc Watkins and Alexis Arquette. Either way, it speaks of, at the very least, of many inconsistencies within Mauceri herself.

How could she not know that there are high level LGBT personnel over at the show, not to mention that the story line actually involves out actors, one of whom is Latino? Maybe as one post over at Daytime Confidential suggests there is more to this behind the scenes Soap Opera. Mauceri should speak up.

Perhaps the casting of Santiago will show Carlotta in a different light. Santiago is an exceptionally talented actress. Perhaps they will give Carlotta more to do. As far as Carlotta is concerned, Latin Catholics—good Latin Catholics—are very tolerant even when they are confronted with something that goes against personal faith. If it is true that Carlotta suspects her son Cristian is gay, she would more than likely cross herself and embrace him unconditionally. She, more than anyone, would know that God made him that way.
