Gay Thursday: Ted Detwiler

Ted Detwiler, one of the stars of Sordid Lives had this to say today on his facebook post:

"come hear me sing...I'm playing one of the leads...It's a staged reading of the cult film classic... The First Nudie Musical...two-night only event will take place on June 15 and 16 at 7:30 at the NoHo Arts Center. Early reservations are advised (seating is limited) and can be made by e-mailing nudiemusical@gmail.com or calling 323 599-7343..."

The movie features a series of farcical lewd musical numbers in the style of classical Hollywood musical comedies including: "Orgasm", "Lesbian Butch Dyke", and "Dancing Dildos." The movie has low-budget feel, with a "musical-within-a-movie" theme in the tradition of Singin' in the Rain but with satirical sexual humor. An early staple of Cinemax, it has become somewhat of a cult classic since its initial release and was released on DVD in 2001. It was one of several farcical musical-comedy collaborations between Kimmel (who also co-starred in the movie) and Williams, along with Naked Space (originally titled Spaceship) in 1981. More on Bruce Kimmel, Creative Force behind Nudie Musical

The First Nudie Musical, a new musical based on the hit cult film from the 1970s comes to the stage in a two-night only staged reading as part of the Los Angeles Festival of New Musicals. The First Nudie Musical came out on film in 1976 to much critical acclaim. It became an instant cult film and it was one of the first films to hit cable TV, where it was hugely successful for many years. Unlike most of the recent film to stage adaptations, Nudie started life as a film musical, so adapting it for the stage seemed to be a natural.

The First Nudie Musical has a book by Bruce Kimmel and David Wechter, and music and lyrics by Bruce Kimmel (Kimmel wrote, co-directed, and starred in the film, along with Cindy Williams, Stephen Nathan, and Diana Canova). In addition to the songs from the film, there are eleven new numbers. The staged reading will be directed by Bruce Kimmel, with choreography by Adam Cates. Cason Murphy is producing. This free two-night only event will take place on June 15 and 16 at 7:30 at the NoHo Arts Center.

Early reservations are advised (seating is limited) and can be made by e-mailing nudiemusical@gmail.com or calling 323 599-7343.
