Unhappily, things really don't change. This is from Sassoon's statement to his commanding officer, the press and Parliament. Because of his status as an acknowledged war hero he was sent to a psychiatric hospital rather than cortmartialed. There he met Wilfred Owen, another poet, and the two formed a close (read into that what you will) relationship.
If you ever get a chance to see Stephen MacDonald's play "Not About Heroes" about Sassoon and Owen don't miss it.
