The Wednesday Word: Chris Meloni and True Blood


When this word came forth, the environs of CoL were shaking in joyous anticipation. We took it upon ourselves to steal the complete article below. No secret that Chris is very special to us. Bernice's skirt found a place where it had not been in a while, i.e. over her head. That's another story, or TMI as the case may be. How ultimately grand it is that Mr. Meloni made the career decision to leave Law & Order: SVU only to find himself working on the new Superman. Now this! Hurray for our team!



If you've been wanting to see more of Christopher Meloni on your television screens, congratulations: You could soon be seeing a lot more of him. According to TVLine, Meloni's eying a major role in the upcoming fifth season of HBO's True Blood. How great is that?!

If Meloni does join True Blood it would the first foray into television work for the Oz veteran since he abruptly quit Law & Order: SVU earlier this year. He's reportedly currently filming his role as Colonel Hardy in the Zack Snyder/Christopher Nolan Superman movie reboot, Man of Steel.

It's thought that Meloni is pondering a role as an "incredibly powerful vampire." But who? The True Blood fan sites and Twitter have exploded with speculation, so check out some theories:

Maybe the vampire thing is some misdirection. TVLine previously reported that True Blood casting directors were looking for "a hard-bodied fiftysomething" to play a new alpha werewolf -- possibly Alcide's dad -- "who isn't likely to share a water bowl with the new pack leader anytime soon." Could that be the role that Meloni's looking at? He did turn 50 this year, and the famously buff actor is no stranger to getting naked on screen.

The casting call for the season-opener is looking for this: "J.D., 50s, a particularly large Marine-type werewolf, he refuses to bow down before the new pack leader..." Remind you of anyone?

Or how about this? TrueBlood.net has lined up Dieter Braun, a "mature and self-possessed" vampire who'll make his debut appearance in the second episode of Season 5, "Authority Always Wins." Described in the casting call as "a vampire of average build who is nevertheless extremely intimidating," Det. Eliot Stabler, er, Dieter "uses innovative methods to torture a prisoner during an interrogation."

Neither Meloni nor HBO have commented yet on the reports linking him to Bon Temps, so stay tuned for updates.

Monday Music: Please Come Home

We do this every year just like David Letterman:

Darlene Love continues to make her mark on David Letterman’s yearly Yuletide show with her perennial hit, “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” which made its debut in the watershed year, 1963.

It was the year before the arrival of the Beatles and the memory which serves well brings to mind “Heat Wave,” “Anyone Who Had A Heart,” “Cry Baby,” “He’s Sure the Boy I love,” and “One Fine Day” among so many other hit songs that year. President Kennedy provided the world with its first movie star world leader with his classy First Lady. The Cuban Missile Crisis and The Bay of Pigs Invasion were behind us. Oh it wasn’t idyllic but the young baby boomers at least had everything in its appropriate place and were optimistic.

Darlene Love was hard at work on what was to become a Christmas music stalwart with the above standout original piece. Here is what she herself tells us about its inception in her autobiography, My Name Is Love:

The summer of 1963 was especially hot, and we were holed up in Gold Star almost the entire time, until two, three, four in the morning. For one we all welcomed Phil’s slave-driving schedule. The more we did the songs, the more the whole project took on its own life, personality, and history. We didn’t know we were building monuments in those days, except when it came to the Christmas album. Early on we knew that this was a landmark, that once in a lifetime opportunity that God bestows on some to change the course of events.

Jeff [Barry] and Ellie [Greenwich] really delivered the goods … proving one more time that the best Christmas songs, like the best love songs are about loss … “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” was so good that I just assumed it would go to
Ronnie [Spector, of the Ronettes].

But poor Ronnie didn’t have enough circuits to handle the high voltage that Phil [Spector] wanted, and so he gave [the song] to me, and it turned out to be the record I’d been waiting to make with Phil in the year I’d known him. This song was even more powerful than “He’s A Rebel,” and this time it would have my name on it. As with all the sessions Phil didn’t want us to be too prepared, so we never even knew what keys we were going to sing in until we got to the studio … The more we worked the greater it all sounded. One night it got so late that my head just dropped behind me and my big old red wig fell off! All the musicians were happy because that finally ended the session.

…. Leon Russell was on the piano, and by the last takes he was playing so hard it was almost like a concerto. He played himself right off the bench and onto the floor and kept on playing. Cher was on background and has this to say: “Darlene started to sing and the hair stood up all over my body. It was a performance that made time stop. When she finished Fanita [one of The Blossoms] fell over with both her hands up in the air.”


… We didn’t finish the album until the end of September … Phil was going to make his first concept album a classic. It was set for release on November 22, 1963, a Friday. A little late in the game, but Phil was banking on an out-of-the-box smash that would sell for years to come.

… in the kitchen, cooking dinner, doing some ironing with the TV on in the living room … I froze over the stove, wooden spoon in hand. … And even though the reporters didn’t say that the back of his head had been blown off, I knew … that it was pretty bad. I probably picked up a napkin to wipe away some tears, and with them all thought of the Christmas album.


Darlene goes on to explain how the album was released and then withdrawn because of the dark cloud that hovered above the nation. The album, of course, has gone on to be released and re-released resurfacing every year as does Darlene’s magnificent performance. Darlene continued to work throughout the decade but those who admired her and her talent had to look hard for her. There was never enough of her.


Phil Spector's Christmas opus emerged as America journeyed across a piece of time that changed it forever. America was on the threshold of the British Invasion and the Vietnamese Escalation. Five years down the line 1968 would explode. Then as now there is the yearning for those who are far away and the loss that makes for classic artistic expression. The album and Darlene's song persist as does the loss that dogs us across generations

Saturday Beefcake Getting You Through The Night: We Are Spartacus




Your Saturday Beefcake Main Course: Classic Greek and Something From




This is James Beard's Pastitsio, It's almost Italian

Ingredients:
1 large or 2 small (1½ pounds) eggplant
Salt
1/3 to ½ cup olive oil
1 pound flavorful Italian sausages, such as cotechino or langanica
1 pound ziti
1/3 cup butter
1/3 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4 cups hot whole milk
1-pound container skim-milk ricotta
1 cup grated parmigiano
1 pound mozzarella, sliced Method:
Preheat oven to 375°.

Cut eggplant into ½-inch cubes and sprinkle with salt. Sauté the cubes in olive oil until delicately browned, shaking the pan well and turning them gently with a wooden spatula. Drain on paper towels.

Prick the sausages with a fork, then place in a pot of boiling water. Parboil the sausages for about 5 minutes until they have released some of their fat. Slice them and combine with the eggplant. Set aside.




Cook ziti in 5 quarts of boiling water until just al dente. Do not overcook, as it will bake further. Drain in a colander.

To make the béchamel sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan and whisk in flour, salt, nutmeg, and pepper until smooth. Cook until the mixture bubbles and the flour is thoroughly cooked, about 5 minutes, then very gradually add 3 cups of the hot milk. Stir over medium heat until the sauce is thickened, let simmer for several minutes, and then stir in the fourth cup of milk.



Cover the bottom of a 13”x9”x2” baking dish (also called a lasagna pan) with a layer of béchamel. Add half the ziti, then half the sausage-eggplant mixture, more sauce, ½ cup parmigiano, ½ container of ricotta, then more sauce, the rest of the ziti and sausage-eggplant mixture, another layer of the sauce, and the rest of the parmigiano and ricotta. Cover the entire pan with slices of mozzarella.



Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the pastitsio is bubbling, but do not overbake. It should have a nice moist quality

Saturday Beefcake Redux: What to Do With Those Lovely Chestnuts


This is a Cape May, New Jersey recipe. The chestnut wine sauce is the creation of Neil Elsohn, now at Gertrude’s in Ventnor.

And one of your favorites from last year, it seems.



Turkey Cutlets, about a kilo or two pounds
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Coarse Salt
Black Pepper
Dried Chestnuts, quarter pound, soaked
Butter, unsalted, two tablespoons
Mushrooms, minced, two ounces
Dry Red Wine, one quarter cup
Cognac, two tablespoons
Flat Leaf Parsley, one sprig, minced



1. Grill the cutlets after coating them in olive oil. Once thoroughly cooked, set them aside.
2. Boil the chestnuts until soft.
3. Purée the chestnuts with about one quarter cup of the cooking water.
4. Simmer the mushrooms in the butter for about three minutes.
5. Add purée, wine, cognac and parsley. Simmer for about five minutes. Stir often.
6. Serve over the cutlets.
7. Variations: add a bit of cream to the simmered mixture, and/or a touch of nutmeg. Substitute fresh oregano for the parsley.

Your Annual Post Thanksgiving Friday Feature



'Tis that time of year when many inhabitants of the United States of America start that long journey until after January 1st into overindulgence. The task begins now with Halloween with its tricked treats and ends with the New Year with its tricks and the call for designated drivers.
In between there should be much dieting, while placing emphasis on the treadmills and related accessories. Easier said than done.

It is that very reason that John Antorino's image graces today's entry. He is a man who obviously knows how to handle the temptations of overindulgence while at the same time exemplifying what one might be better choosing to indulge in, so to speak.

The recipe choice is very appropriate for the time of year and very much an exceptional suggestion for indulging either over or under.



Scaloppine di Tacchino



Seasoned Flour
(sea salt & ground pepper)
2 Eggs, large beaten with milk
2 Cups Fresh beadcrumbs
3 Cups finely chopped pecans
Turkey scallops, 750 grams, pounded
Granny Smith, cored, sliced thinly
Sweet Butter 3 tablespoons
Light Olive Oil or Almond Oil, 3 tblsp
Orange Juice, 1 cup, fresh
Orange Liqueur, Grand Marnier or Cointreau, 3 shots
Chicken Broth, about 1 cup
Cornstarch, 1 tsp
Parsley and Orange Rind

1. Mix bread crumbs with the pecans
2. Dredge the turkey in resulting mixture, dip in eggs, then coat again with mixture
3. In a large skillet saute' the apple in butter and oil (1/2 teaspoon each) until somewhat crispy, just a couple of minutes. Then transfer to a platter. Cover it.
4. Cook the turkey in batches in the same skillet over moderate heat with the remaining oil and butter until firm, i.e. a couple of minutes on each side then transfer to the plate with the apple slices.
5. Wipe out the skillet, add the orange juice and half the liqueur and boil until half reduction.
6. Add the broth and do the same.
7. In a small bowl whisk the cornstarch with the remaining liqueur and then add to the sauce, salt, pepper to taste and bring to a boil.
8. Arrange turkey and apple slices on 6 plates, spoon sauce over the turkey, garnish.

Sweet Potato and Chestnut Salad

Light Olive Oil, about 3 ounces
Sweet Potatoes, about 500 grams cut into one inch pieces
Sweet Butter, about 3 tablespoons
Orange Liqueur, Grand Marnier or Cointreau
Fresh Juice: lemon, lime or orange, c. 1 tablespoon
Cooked Chestnuts, halved, about 250 grams
Ginger root, minced, about 2 teaspoons
Raspberry vinegar, 3 tablespoons
Garlic, minced, one clove
Orange rind, grated: about teaspoons
Radicchio, arugula and endive leaves
Scallions, two, minced
Crisp bacon -- cut into very small pieces or soy substitute, about 125 grams

1. Preheat oven to 425F
2. Heat three tablespoons of the oil in a skillet. Therein saute the potatoes with salt and pepper to taste until golden. Remove and drain.
3. Melt the butter in a baking dish over moderate heat, add liqueur, juice, potatoes, chestnuts, ginger, and salt & pepper to paste.
4. Roast for 15 to 20 minutes, basting occasionally.
5. In a bowl whisk vinegar, garlic, orange rind -- salt & pepper, adding remaining oil in a stream, whisking until all is combined well.
6. Add potatoes and chestnuts to a bowl while still warm and toss.
7. Line 6 plates with the greens, divide the potato mixture among them, garnish with the scallions and bacon or its substitute.

It would seem that these recipes call for you to invite five other people over to partake of this wonderful repast. If you truly want to indulge, invite one or two less over or simply invite someone like Mr Antorino over ... and over again.

Monday Muse: Kelly, Tell Us Something We Don't Know



Kelly Ripa says there was something perversely sexy about watching her husband Mark Consuelos kiss fellow actor Craig Bierko onstage, reports New York Daily News.

The Live! with Kelly hostess attended opening night of Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays, and during one of the short play to raise awareness for marriage equality, her husband engages in a kiss with Bierko. “As an actor, there’s something voyeuristic and perversely sexy about watching my husband” kiss someone else," Ripa said.

The paper asked Consuelos why he didn't use tongue during the kiss with Bierko. “I’m warming up to it little bit," he joked. "I don’t want to be so easy.”

Joseph Sayers (Born October 15, 1983 in Lakewood, New York) is a male fashion model best known for his nude centerfold for Abercrombie and Fitch Quarterly, shot by Bruce Weber, and also for the fact that, despite being only 5'6" tall (most male models are between 5'11" and 6'2"), he has experienced great success as a fashion and commercial model.

Sayers was originally discovered on the ModelSwim website and was first scouted and signed by agent Adam Silver of Silver Model Management in New York City. Shortly afterward, Sayers also signed with agent Jason Kanner at Major Model Management for fashion modeling work.
