The Wednesday Word: George and Elisabetta

We posted this in 2008~Just Sayin'

Usually our Friday focus is on an event that will happen in the future. There might have a been a post or two on an event that has passed. At any rate, there is an effort to focus on high minded events with fund-raising and awareness in mind. Well, we are being a bit more frivolous this evening, but there is mention of a charity within.

Anyway, last evening, Rosemary Clooney's nephew, George, was in Rome promoting his movie, Leatherheads. Supper was at Rome's Eden Hotel. In attendance, was George's very good friend, Manuele Malenotti and Renee whatshername. Included here are some interesting photos--just saying--and some historical quotes.

"Humour Makes a Man Stylish"

Effortlessly stylish, George Clooney mixes casual and classic in a way that makes him a star off-screen as much as on.

When he launched the humanitarian aid charity, Not On Our Watch, with his Ocean's Thirteen co-stars and producer Jerry Weintraub earlier this year, Clooney wore a series of sharply tailored suits. His Cary Grant haircut, with its distinctive side parting, gave him the air of a gentleman.

This week Clooney is at his villa in Lake Como, Italy. He takes a break from the control room where he is editing his new film, Leatherheads, to talk about his role as a modern-day style icon and his push to raise global awareness for the crisis in Darfur, the focus of his charity's first appeal, using that other great style icon of our times: the motorcycle jacket.

Belstaff was originally a classic motorcycle accessories brand, which made jackets that were worn by male icons as varied as Che Guevera and Steve McQueen.
During the Milan spring/summer 08 collections the now global, luxury label showcased a range of leather jackets designed in consultation with George Clooney and his Ocean's Thirteen co-stars Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle.

The Not On Our Watch logo is stitched in yellow on the back and the inside of the jackets, which are made in five different styles. All proceeds from sales of the jackets, priced from £750 to £900, will go directly to the foundation.
Manuele Malenotti, the creative director of Belstaff, recalls when he first met Clooney.

"George was doing a bike trip across Italy and he came to our showroom as a fan of the label," he says. "I gave him a jacket as a present. "Later we created the Running Heart Foundation together, which throughout Italy sponsors doctors on motorbikes to reach heart attack victims as quickly as possible. It has answered more than 6,000 emergency calls, and operates in more than 20 Italian cities."
Looking back at the images of Clooney at Cannes, we see him pulling funny faces, smiling beguilingly and cracking up with Brad Pitt on the red carpet. I ask Clooney what makes a man stylish. "For me, a sense of humour is number one. It's certainly what's most attractive. It's not the first thing you notice at 21, but it's the first thing you notice now."

If celebrity is a credit card, I'm using my credit. My job is to try and find ways of talking about issues that move us forward. I don't make policy, but I can shine a light on faulty or good policy.

"The Not On Our Watch launch reached more than nine million people. We need to focus global attention on the plight of the 2.5 million civilians who have fled their homes. Rather than talk about who I'm dating, let's talk about saving lives."

Another Quote:

Clooney, the proud owner of more than 100 jackets, "is a very good friend," Malenotti says. "He's very funny. George is always making fun of everybody. He fits into every single jacket perfect."
